Hello

I will be applying to med school in a year. I saw that you said that a year of calculus is required. However, I looked up the web pages of quite a few schools that DID NOT require calculus. Now, do you know which schools do require calculus? Also, could it be that calculus is just implied that you take it, but not actually written on paper? thanks Jen

You're entirely correct not every school requires a year of calculus. Many schools do not require a year of calculus but either require a year of "college-level" mathematics or "recommend" that applicants take college-level mathematics.

As you have noticed, I have intentionally misled people on my site for the sake of simplicity.

The reality is that most people who are applying to medical school do not have a warm place secured for them at a school of their choice. So an average applicant needs to apply to 15-20 medical schools. What this implies is that even if a few of the schools you're applying, let's say only five out of twenty, require a year of calculus or "college-level" math that essentially means that it IS a de facto requirement for medical school admissions. In addition, given that many schools suggest a year of calculus/math and many premeds take it--you may be at a competitive disadvantage if you don't take math/calculus.

Of course, you always have the option of not considering it a requirement but then you limit your options to the schools that do not require 1 year of math/calculus.
