Subj: QUESTION ABOUT UNDERGRADUATES

Date: 10/25/99

I have gave this long and hard consideration but im now 23 years old and I know its very late to decide that I want to become a doctor. My hobby in fitness and nutrition has led me to this decision. I should tell you first that I didn't finish high school for reasons beyond my control. What is the process for me to get in to med. school if I didn't finish school the traditional way? The reason I ask is that in your web site you mention that when getting into a school that you bring things like recommendations from your high school. Im going to enroll in a school that finds were you left off in high school and you start from there to earn your diploma not a G. E. D. Would this school be able to recommend me or would they frown on it because I didn't finish high school? Thanks for your help id really appreciate all the help you can give me.

First of all, nowhere on my web site do I mention or recommend that anyone submitted recommendations from high school when applying to medical school. I think it would not only be useless but embarrassing too. I think you've been reading the section for high-school students, where I mention that recommendations from high school teachers play a role in admissions to COLLEGE, not to MEDICAL SCHOOL.

Whether you get a GED or a high school diploma is of little importance when applying to medical school. Before you apply to medical school, you MUST finish a 4-year college or university. Only your college/university performance and recommendations count when you apply to medical school.

So, (1) You need to get a high school diploma or GED

(2) You need to get into a college/university and do well while taking premed requirements (listed on this site)

(3) Only then can you apply to medical school.
