Subj: Premed. Anxieties!
Date: 10/3/99
Hi alex! I have recently graduated from the University of Florida with honors. I maintained an overall GPA of 3.6. My upper division GPA was 3.9 and consisted of Mostly Nursing Prerequisites. [anatomy, physiology, chem 1(mot for premed) , etc.]. I am now interested in attending a postbaccalaureate premed program. I was particularly interested in NYU or Columbia. Which both offer this. My questions lie partly in my fear of the demands of the science prerequisites. How much demand do medical schools put on grades in science classes when they are considering a Postbac. Also do they consider my upper division GPA when making their decision. In addition, any information that you have on either one of those two schools would be greatly appreciated. I know I have a lot of questions but I've been feeling lost lately. Thank you for this website and this opportunity.

First, the purpose of attending a postbacc program is to satisfy the science prerequisities for medical school admissions--consequently, the grades you'll get will bear serious weight on your chances for admission. Your GPA has been pretty good this far, and if you're like most nurses I know --who are known to be hard-workers you'll do well. As a general guideline, medical schools do not distinguish between upper- and lower-division GPA. Your cumulative overall and science averages are what really matter.
As for schools--I know Columbia has a large post-bacc program and I know many people who have done it. I do not know much about NYU post-bacc program, but many of my comrades at medical school have gone there for undergrad. Both schools are generally known for their rigor. I think it is wise to remember that in spite of all the glistering statistics that the schools will give you, a good post-bacc program can only open the doors--but hard work is what gets your through those doors to the other side of the fence, ie to the medical school.
