Hi. I was told that residents work 80 hour weeks. Is it possible to work 40 hour wks for twice as long? I have many family obligations and working virtually 24 hours a day would go very well with my schedule. Thanks

It is true that residents work long hours. I do not know whether it is 60 or 80 hours a day, but it is certainly not forty.

I do not think that working 60-80 hours a week goes very well with anyone's schedule whether or not they have family obligations. Yet I have not heard of any opportunities for working part-time during the residency.

There seems to be movement to limit resident's workweek to something like 60 hours a week but the issue seems to be in the air for many years and has not gained much momentum.

There are of course opportunities to work part-time AFTER you finish your medical education (ie medical school and residency).

Hope this helps a bit.

Alex
