Hi!

Great site! I am getting my secondary application now and I don't know if I should hunt down a type writer to type them or if it is okay to hand write them. No one seems to know. Do you know? Thanks!!

Hi,

Well, unless you are an artist with calligraphic handwriting, I would suggest that you get a typewriter. In fact, even if you really have calligraphic handwriting, I would still suggest you get a typewriter.

It is just a matter of presentation. You want your secondaries to be neat and you want to make it as easy as possible for the readers--and typewriter does the best job.

Also, I would suggest that you invest the extra time and actually type-in the info directly onto the application instead of pasting it as I've heard some people do.

Being a sloppy typist, and having never before used a manual typewriter, I photocopied my secondaries and tried typing in my responses on photocopies to make sure that (a) my answers fit in the allowed space and (b) they look OK. You may want to do that at least initially--so that you get the feeling of how the typewriter works, etc.

You can find a decent, new machine for about $60-$100. Open local yellow pages and call a few shops. I got a decent Brother machine with type-over error correction tape for $70, which is pretty good. There are more expensive "industrial" models which cost $200 and over but you do not need them.

Also, buy an extra cartridge and error-correction tape. They go fast, and you do not want to be stuck with a useless typewriter the night before your applications are due.

Best of luck,

Alex
